‘Innovative and forward-thinking practice’ achieves top-tier rankings

Thursday 4 November in Business

An Isle of Man law firm has again been recognised as one of the most successful and influential practices in the British Isles.

DQ Advocates has received ringing endorsements from two highly respected directories with the company described as an ‘innovative and forward-thinking practice’ comprising expertise, diversity in knowledge and experience.

Both the Douglas-based practice and its staff were commended for their work in both the newly-released Chambers and Legal 500 rankings, gaining numerous accolades across key business areas and retaining high-level status.

In the Chambers and Partners High Net Worth guide, which encompasses the private wealth market internationally and features the world’s leading high net worth lawyers, DQ is praised for providing the highest levels of expert service for clients - handling both contentious and non-contentious matters - with a ‘strong reputation for advising wealthy individuals and institutional clients on a broad range of matters’.

Leanne McKeown

Compiled by a team of editors which conducts extensive research among legal practitioners and clients, Chambers has been ranking lawyers and legal firms since 1990 and describes DQ as a unique organisation “because of its diversity across so many different sectors and areas of expertise" and a “one-stop shop for everything that you could need as a trust service provider".

In the newly-released Chambers and Partners UK 2022 rankings, Managing Director Mark Dougherty and fellow Director Leanne McKeown are named as leading individuals in Band 2 for corporate & finance and employment respectively, with Adam Killip and Mark Emery named as associates to watch in those respective areas.

Among the testimonials, Leanne is praised for her ‘strong business acumen’ with the DQ departments acknowledged for a ‘knowledgeable and flexible approach’ and a ‘first-class team which treats all matters with urgency’.

DQ’s dispute resolution team also picked up a band three ranking.

Meanwhile, both DQ and its professionals have continued to excel in specialist practice areas, achieving Tier 1 and Tier 2 rankings in the Legal 500 directory.

‘Exemplary individual’ Annemarie retained her status in the Legal 500 Hall of Fame in two categories (insurance & pensions and private clients, trust & tax).

Described as a ‘go-to adviser in the Isle of Man for trusts and pension matters’, Annemarie is further acclaimed for continued excellence and deemed to be at the pinnacle of the profession, while her colleague Donna Matthews is listed as a ‘Next Generation Partner’ (private clients, trust and tax).

Considered an important third-party reference guide to the legal sector across the country, the Legal 500 says the strength of the DQ team is its ‘diversity in knowledge and experience’ with key appointments in the tax and compliance sectors setting it aside from local competitors.

In total, it ranks DQ as Tier 1 in two practice areas (employment and private clients, trust & tax) and no fewer than five categories in Tier 2 (dispute resolution; banking, finance & capital markets; commercial property; corporate & commercial and insurance & pensions).

There have been a further 13 individual endorsements with three senior lawyers named as ‘Leading Individuals’, two members of staff ranked as ‘Next Generation’ partners, and five employees classified as ‘Rising Stars’.

Leanne McKeown is named as a leading individual in employment, an accolade matched by Mark Dougherty and director Andrew Harding (corporate and commercial).

In the Employment sector in which practice head Leanne is acknowledged for her work in equality and discrimination claims and headlined as a ‘tenacious stand-out practitioner’ who ‘leads the team from the front’, she is joined by colleagues Mark Emery and Jessica McManus who are both acclaimed as rising stars.

That honour is also awarded to the ‘responsive, helpful and knowledgeable’ Adam Killip (banking, finance & capital markets) who is also commended as a rising star alongside colleague Donna Mathews (corporate & commercial) and Alexander Armstrong (dispute resolution).

Adam Killip

One testimonial features Alexander as ‘one of the best lawyers I have ever worked with in 20 years of working in the international litigation and business area’.

Mark Emery, meanwhile, is included as a Next Generation Partner and pinpointed as ‘one of the sharpest lawyers who ‘adopts a pragmatic and solutions-based approach to litigation.’

Managing Director Mark Dougherty, himself described as a professional who “leads the firm with drive and a determination to bring success to the practice and the wider Isle of Man economy”, said: ‘This is a superb set of results for the team from two esteemed legal directories and is reflective of DQ’s ability to provide a quality client experience. It also demonstrates the dedication of all colleagues and our contacts who took time to discuss their experience of working with us with the researchers.

‘We should be proud of all that has been achieved this year and a big thank you to our staff for all their hard work which ensures we remain a law practice of choice.’
