A law firm recognised for providing innovative solutions for complex tax law matters has further strengthened its offering with the appointment of a respected figure in the Island’s taxation network.

Paul Cawley has joined DQ Advocates in a consultancy role as Head of Indirect Tax following more than a decade with the accountancy firm KPMG where he was a Director.

A regular contributor to tax media and an international speaker on VAT and Customs matters, Paul has experience in a wide range of industries including financial services, property, online gaming, and the yachting and aviation sectors.

In his previous role, he was responsible for the indirect tax function of the newly merged KPMG Crown Dependencies firm.

DQ’s tax law team offers specialist advice in a range of areas as the company provides a full range of legal, regulatory, tax and compliance services to local and global clients.

Paul said: ‘It really is a pleasure to be joining a practice with such professional strength and depth of knowledge, as well as a modern approach to the landscape of legal and advisory services.

‘The team has comprehensive expertise of Isle of Man and UK tax law and an excellent client base. I look forward to working with the whole team and continuing to build on its success.’

The appointment reunites Paul with Head of Tax Greg Jones who led the KPMG tax practice in the Isle of Man for 26 years until 2019.

Greg explained: ‘High-quality tax planning advice is essential as tax law becomes increasingly complex. That means both businesses and individuals need tax specialists who are able to identify the risks and opportunities and help them ensure compliance.

‘Paul is a respected professional with a wealth of knowledge and I am confident he will quickly become an invaluable member of the firm.’

A former assurance officer in the fields of VAT and Customs & International Trade, Paul is also a committed contributor to the Island community and was Race Director of the Promenade Relay over seven years which raised more than £80,000 for good causes.

DQ Managing Director Mark Dougherty said: ‘We are delighted to welcome Paul to our tax law team which is renowned for delivering creative and effective solutions to clients across a range of industry sectors. His vast experience and specialist knowledge will provide us with further expertise to enhance the services we provide for our clients. I am very pleased he has chosen to bring this experience to DQ.’
