Ready, Set, Run! A fun way to exercise this New Year

Friday 31 December in Community

December can leave us feeling fuller and perhaps, a little bit heavier than usual, and our motivation to burn off all that Christmas Dinner can start to fade after a few weeks into January when we’re weary of our New Year’s Resolutions.

It seems running on your own, is much harder than it looks (shout out to Mo Farah who makes it too easy). That’s when the likes of local organisations such as Nobles parkrun come to the rescue.

Since its launch in 2017, Nobles parkrun takes place at… you guessed it, Nobles Park in Douglas. Running all year round, the event is closely connected with the main organisation, parkrun UK – an initiative which is seen in parks across the British Isles.

Locals can choose to walk, jog or run a 5km route every Saturday morning, starting at 9am. Volunteers arrive at 08:30, followed by a first timers briefing at 08:45.

Nobles parkrun takes place, whatever the weather (in most cases) and has previously been involved with supporting local charities, whether that’s donning their pink leg warmers for breast cancer supporting charities. Themed runs are also a hot favourite for the likes of Hop Tu Naa, Christmas and Easter, as well as other fancy dress. Isn’t exercise starting to sound more fun already?

The runs are open to anyone, regardless of ability and aims to provide a friendly and inclusive community atmosphere. Or, if you don’t want to push yourself but fancy getting involved, then volunteering opportunities are available for anyone who fancies marshalling.

Registration is free and can be done at www.parkrun.org.uk/register/. Once signed up you’re then provided with your own, personal bar code which records your weekly results. Some runners have celebrated their 50th or even 100th park run.

You can get involved by visiting the Nobles parkrun Facebook page, www.parkrun.org.uk/nobles or emailing [email protected].

So… if you’re wanting to start a new routine to get fit or even just to get out for some fresh air, a natter and meet new people then head down to Nobles Park next Saturday. You never know, you could just start to enjoy running. And your fitbit will never have been so proud of you!
