We’ve all heard it before… ‘New Year, New Me’ and you wouldn’t be wrong for thinking it’s a great time to try your hand at something new. But did you know there’s actually a huge variety of leisure courses at UCM to help you on the path to success? Islandlife.im checked out just a few of the courses on offer.

Ceramics

Creating ceramic artwork is a rewarding process from start to finish. Starting from scratch with a piece of clay, using your imagination to mould it into your chosen shape, adding intricate designs and then glazing; the process is very relaxing. Why not come along and give it a go?

Crochet

Crocheting is a skill which allows you to switch off, relax and chat with friends whilst creating intricate and impressive designs. This is a great opportunity to make something for yourself or a personalised gifts for a loved one, whilst enjoying the company of others.

Woodwork

Whether you frequently enjoy carpentry or you haven’t dabbled since secondary school, you don’t have to be an experienced joiner to get your hands dirty. Go at your own pace, build your confidence and learn this useful and relaxing skill.

Vegan and Gluten Free Baking

Are you Vegan or Gluten Free? Or perhaps you have friends or family who are, and you would like to cook for them? Come along to one of UCM’s sessions and surprise a loved one with your secret culinary talents.

Badminton

Get your heart racing, sweat out your stresses and have a good time playing badminton! What better way to burn off those Christmas treats and enjoy some ‘friendly’ competition? Come alone or bring a friend, the more the merrier.

Golf

If you’re new to golf or you would like to continue improving your skills, don’t be shy, get involved and meet like-minded people whilst taking onboard useful tips and tricks. Golf is a fantastic sport which allows you to focus purely on developing your own technique.

Pilates

Allow your stresses to slip away and take part in one of UCM’s Pilates sessions. Each class focuses on trying to relax muscles which are tense and uses gentle bodyweight exercises to tone and strengthen numerous muscles around the body. If you are wanting to escape the business of everyday life this is a great course,

Tai Chi

Tai chi is a mind and body practice which involves shifting the body's weight through a series of postures and rhythmic movements combined with mental focus, breathing, and relaxation techniques. This is a very reflective course which is great for those seeking time to slow down, pause and think.

Yoga

Build and tone your muscles through a series of gentle, relaxing bodily positions. Yoga is the perfect activity to loosen you up and make you feel relaxed and content. Whether you are an experienced yogi, or you have never tried it before, we welcome all abilities to our sessions starting in the spring.

Wellbeing

Feeling a little worn down after so many covid-19 disruptions or just feeling a little overwhelmed with life at the moment? Take a breath, slow down and learn how to truly look after your mental wellbeing with one of our wellbeing courses. Find your voice and become a confident public speaker, understand those around you a little better by improving your listening and empathising abilities or maybe even immerse yourself in nature inspired poetry? There is something for everyone.

Sleep – a Practical Guide

Put bad dreams to bed and learn about the biology of sleep during this 8-week course! Have you ever wondered why you’re not sleeping so well or why you’re waking up still feeling tired? Explore relaxation techniques and understand how lifestyle choices including diet, exercise, environment, stress and anxiety issues, can impact a peaceful night’s sleep!
