Swinging for golfing success

Tuesday 7 December in Sport

NAME

Tom Gandy

AGE

29

CLUB

Rowany Golf Club/Castletown Golf Club

POSITION

European and Challenge Tour Golf Professional

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE SPORT?

When I was 4-5 years old my brothers would attend some junior coaching up at the club. We took up the game properly when I was around 10 years old and from there I was hooked. It really helped having two brothers of similar age who were also keen, as there was lots of competition between us!

WHO INSPIRED YOU TO TAKE UP THE SPORT?

My dad initially for his involvement at Rowany, but then my mum also because she didn’t have to stand up there for hours on end with us boys watching us practice/try kill each other! They also used to run us to all the different junior events across the island, with my dad even becoming the Isle of Man Junior Captain taking us away to the UK to compete in junior events.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR SPORT…

The fresh air and the company. Golf is a great game socially, meaning people of all levels can compete against one another. I really enjoy being able to play with friends on a nice day, but I must say it’s even better when you’re winning! I really enjoy seeing your hard work pay off too. Putting the hours in doesn’t guarantee success, but when you really get to grips with something and feel like you have full control of your golf ball, it is a great feeling.

THE MOST CHALLENGING THING YOU FIND IS…

Currently it’s the travel part! COVID has made this part of my job an absolute nightmare over the last two seasons. But if we take that out of the equation, it has to be being able to accept playing below the level you know you’re capable of. I find it sometimes difficult to accept for all my effort and for all the hard-work I put in, some days it just doesn’t go your way and you might shoot a bad score. It can make an absolute fool out of you! But then that’s why it’s also good as you can never do it perfectly, ever day is a chance to keep chipping away and get better

YOUR PROUDEST SPORTING ACHIEVEMENT…

I’ve had some great highlights. Winning the Isle of Man Championships in 2017 before turning professional, representing England for three year, turning professional, my first professional win or even my run at European Tour Qualifying, which saw me gain my status on the European Tour, officially making my debut on that tour in 2020. But actually, the day I look back on most fondly is probably still when I made the cut at the Isle of Man Championships for the first time as a 16 year old in 2008. I did so by shooting a new junior course record, qualifying as the best under 21 player but most importantly it was at Rowany and my dad was sat there out the front of the club house watching me come down the last. I know he was proud that day and little did we know that only two and a half years later he would no longer be with us. So that day will always live long in my memory.

YOUR BIGGEST SPORTING INFLUENCE IS…

Tiger Woods – as a golfer he really changed the game and was just so exciting to watch.

YOUR EARLIEST SPORTING MEMORY…

I fondly remember the summer holidays where my brothers and I, along with a core group of other juniors from Rowany would play two rounds a day and eat chip baps in the clubhouse in between

YOUR TEAMMATES/COACHES WOULD DESCRIBE YOU AS…

an overthinker. Over analytical at times, my own harshest critic, but determined, gritty, willing to work my socks off and I would hope, a decent fella!

IN 5 YEARS TIME WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF…. I

I see myself as a full time member of the European Tour, competing in the biggest golf tournaments in Europe and hopefully competing in Major Championships.

WHAT IS YOUR MAIN SPORTING GOAL…

To have a long and successful career in the game.

TOP TIP FOR YOUR YOUNGER SELF?

Stay true to what you know about your own game. Yes you can improve in all areas, but don’t move away from what you know you do well – that’s what makes you, you.
