THE success of CricStart, the island’s youth cricket programme, has led to the Isle of Man Cricket Association to extend it into the autumn and winter.
With sponsorship from Ravenscroft, which opened an office in the island last summer, CricStart covers CricKids for youngsters aged 3 – 6, CricSoft for those between six and 10, CricFit for 14+, batting and bowling clinics as well as women’s and girls’ cricket.
‘We’ve been thrilled with the success and have more than 130 children signed up to take part in the various different activities over the summer. Some youngsters are on courses and some are doing camps but all of them will be developing their bowling, batting and fielding skills, building their confidence, being active, enjoying themselves and hopefully becoming future island players,’ said IOMCA development officer Greig Wright.
All six of the island’s cricket clubs with junior sections will be running the CricStart programme during the summer.
‘It’s been fantastic to see the youngsters wearing their CricStart kit while they are out and about and we have spotted many getting in extra practise in parks and on the beaches. That enthusiasm is why we have decided to continue the initiative into the autumn and winter,’ said Mr Wright.
‘The 10 week courses will be open to those who have never played before and those who have been involved over the summer and we are expecting there to be a lot of demand. None of this would have been possible without the support of Ravenscroft and it’s fantastic that they are investing in the future of cricket.’
Will Corrin, director of Ravenscroft in the Isle of Man, said it was great to hear that the CricStart initiative had started so successfully.
‘The Isle of Man Cricket Association and the clubs are so passionate about the sport that we knew CricStart would go really well. We hope all those youngsters who have taken part this summer continue to play and encourage their friends to get involved over the winter.’
