Entries close on 15th August for Gran Fondo Isle of Man 2021

Thursday 12 August in Sport

Entries will close at midnight on Sunday 15th August for the 2021 Gran Fondo Isle of Man presented by PokerStars.

Last year’s event saw record numbers participating in one of the four closed road distance cycling challenges - the Gran, Medio, Piccolo and Minisculo Fondos.. The event is designed to be accessible for cyclists of all ages and abilities and offers the chance to enjoy cycling on closed roads.

This year’s Gran Fondo event, which takes place on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th September, is boosted by the prestigious status of being a UCI Gran Fondo World Championship qualifying event which has already seen many UK cyclists confirm their participation as they bid to qualify for the final, which will be held in Sarajevo in October.

Sunday’s 137km Gran Fondo race features over 1900meters of climbing as it circumnavigates some of the toughest terrain the Isle of Man has to offer. Riders will have to overcome gradients of over 25% on the climbs, several technical descents as well as a 2km gravel section as they navigate their way around the closed roads route.

Running concurrently with the Gran Fondo will be the 72km Medio Fondo and the 32km Piccolo Fondo.

The Medio Fondo is for recreational riders who want to test themselves that little bit further and features one of the Island’s most challenging ascents – as well as one of its very best descents – offering riders the perfect balance of effort and reward.

Aimed at families and beginners, the Piccolo Fondo will wind its way around the flatter farmland of the Island’s northern plains, through a patchwork of tiny villages and church steeples, set amongst the fields and blooming hedgerows.

New to the schedule is a UCI Individual Time Trial on Saturday 4th September, which takes in the climb of Snaefell Mountain on the TT circuit. The course covers just 9km but should not be underestimated, with a total of 400 metres of climbing to overcome.

The ever popular free-to-enter Isle of Man Creamery Minisculo Fondo features on the schedule on Saturday afternoon. The family-friendly event, held over a half-mile circuit in and around Ramsey’s Mooragh Park is open to children, families and beginners with participants completing as many laps as they want in an hour’s worth of riding in a safe, fully closed roads environment.

Entries are available via granfondoisleofman.com and will close at midnight on Sunday 15th August. The Gran Fondo is £50 while the Medio and Piccolo Fondos are £30 and £20 respectively. The UCI Time Trial is £20.
